Round 7 : CATALUNYA GP : 07/04/2010
Fighting through difficulties, Yuki grasps his first victory in 4 years
(Qualifiers: 2nd; Final: WIN)

CATALUNYAThe seventh race in Catalonia was the last of the three consecutive races. It was also the course where Yuki made his best time during the pre-season testing. Since he had data to go on, he started from there. Although he was able to make a certain time, however, it was difficult to get it down any further as things were. The weather was good during race week, as it was in England and the Netherlands. The session took place in 35-degree weather with the blazing hot surface of the track exceeding 50 degrees. On the first day, teammate Raffaele De Rosa used a proto frame he made before the start of the season and achieved a satisfactory time. Yuki saw that and asked his team if he could try it. The team agreed and worked on the machine all night to have it ready for Saturday's run.
Yuki went into the race with the reinforced modified proto frame, which gave him slightly better turning performance and resulted in a better time. He was able to achieve the second best time in the qualifying round even though he got caught behind a slow rider during his last time attack. That placed him in the front row for the first time since the third race in France. Compared to the races up to and including the last one, the condition of the machine was better, but the underlying problems had still not been resolved. That meant there was a high probability that the final round was going to prove difficult, especially since it was expected to be a tight race.

CATALUNYAYuki got off to a good start but was unable to take the hole-shot. Still, he was able to recapture his third place position in the opening lap. Having crashed early on in several races this season, he was careful making the first laps. During that time, he was passed by Toni Elias and Julian Simon, falling into fifth place. In first place was Andrea Iannone, who left the pack behind and won both in the Netherlands and the fourth race in Italy. He was performing well this time, too, and was getting ready to tear loose. Yuki got to the front of the pack early and wanted to catch up with Iannone, but he reminded himself that he needed to set his pace first.

CATALUNYAPassing Elias, Yuki moved into fourth place and quickly passed Thomas Luthi and Simon to take second place. Once he led the pack, he picked up the pace. Just as he did, Iannone was hit with a penalty for passing in a yellow-flag zone. After Iannone's pit through penalty, Yuki easily took the first place position and fought hard to stay focused. Leaving the pack behind, he made it through the checkered flags to claim what was his first victory in four years since the 10th race in Germany in 2006 (250 cc) and his first victory ever in the Moto2 class.

CATALUNYAComment from Yuki Takahashi
" I finally won! My team put in a lot of hard work, so I wanted to answer with a good performance. I'm very happy that I was able to deliver the goods. Iannone and I were setting a fast pace during the qualifying round on Saturday and the warm-up this morning, so I thought if we pushed hard we would leave the rest behind. That's exactly what happened, and after I took first place following Iannone's pit through penalty, it was hard to stay focused, but I am so happy that I was able to get my first victory in four years. I'm very thankful to my team, Honda and all my fans. Thank you all! "
